The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released a Global Risk Assessment report last week warning that China, described as “the top threat” to American dominance in space, is taking steps to weaponize Earth’s orbit. The report details an upswing in China’s military and commercial space activity, with particular concern over its growing ability to shoot down satellites using missiles or disable them with lasers, according to Defense News’ analysis.
ODNI Director Avril Haines told lawmakers that China’s ambitions extend beyond weapons. “I think there’s just no question, as a general matter, that China is focused on achieving leadership in space, in fact, as compared to the United States and has been working hard on a variety of different efforts in this area to try to contest what has been presumed our leadership,” Haines said, according to Defense News.
Space Station and Geopolitical Shifts
China is also nearing the start of construction on its next space station in orbit. While not a military action, the project signals China’s intent to become a major space power, especially as the International Space Station approaches retirement. The intelligence committee’s report urges officials to recognize these changing geopolitical dynamics.
The report’s release underscores growing concerns about space militarization and the potential for concrete threats in future conflicts. It also highlights the dual-use nature of China’s space program, where civil and commercial advances can support military objectives.
