A fire at the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System in the Mojave Desert has forced the shutdown of one of its three power towers, raising questions about the facility's ability to meet its contractual obligations. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, when a small blaze broke out in the plant's third unit.

San Bernardino County Fire Department Captain Mike McClintock said the likely cause was misaligned mirrors that concentrated sunlight onto electrical cables, igniting them. Plant personnel climbed roughly 300 feet to reach the fire and extinguished it within 20 minutes, before firefighters arrived on scene. Officials have not commented further while an investigation is ongoing.

The Ivanpah facility, located on federal land about 45 miles southwest of Las Vegas, uses computer-controlled mirrors to reflect sunlight onto boilers atop its towers. The resulting steam drives turbines to generate electricity. The plant, which opened two years ago, has the capacity to power approximately 140,000 homes in California.

With one tower already down for maintenance, the fire has left the facility operating on only one of its three towers. The impact on California's power supply remains unclear, and no estimate of damage costs has been released for the $2.2 billion installation.

Deadline Looms for Power Output

The fire comes at a critical time for Ivanpah, which is under pressure from the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to deliver the output specified in its power purchase agreement (PPA) by the end of July. NRG Energy, a part owner of the plant, has indicated that meeting that target is unlikely.

The plant's operational difficulties highlight the challenges of concentrating solar power technology, which relies on precise mirror alignment and intense heat generation. The incident also underscores the fragility of large-scale renewable energy infrastructure when faced with equipment failures.

As the investigation continues, stakeholders are watching closely to see how the shutdown affects the plant's performance and whether it can recover in time to meet its obligations.
