Blockchain, the technology best known for underpinning cryptocurrencies, is gaining attention as a potential tool for environmental protection and sustainable governance. Unlike traditional databases, a blockchain records transactions in 'blocks' that are linked and validated by multiple parties. Once recorded, the data cannot be altered without consensus across the network. This inherent transparency and immutability make it an attractive option for systems where trust and accountability are critical.

While Bitcoin remains the most famous application, the underlying technology has far broader potential. For instance, musician Imogen Heap has proposed using blockchain to ensure recording artists receive fairer royalty deals, calling it a catalyst for industry change. Toyota is exploring how it could aggregate data from vehicle owners, fleet managers, and manufacturers to accelerate the development of autonomous driving. Walmart, meanwhile, has used blockchain to trace contaminated food sources back to their origin, reducing the time needed to identify and address health risks.

Governments are also taking notice. Tunisia has moved its national currency onto a blockchain, and Japan is set to accept blockchain-based transactions at 260,000 stores by summer. These examples underscore the technology's credibility and its potential to reshape how institutions operate.

Four Ways Blockchain Could Support Sustainability

In a commentary published in Nature, researcher Guillaume Chapron outlined four specific mechanisms by which blockchain could improve environmental governance and sustainability.

1. Securing Property Rights. Because blockchain records cannot be altered or manipulated without consensus, they could protect individuals and communities from corrupt governments or companies attempting to seize assets. Pilot projects in Accra, Ghana, as well as in Georgia and Honduras, are already using blockchain to formalize and secure land ownership, offering a bulwark against unjust eviction.

2. Enhancing Supply Chain Traceability. When paired with the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain could create reliable, tamper-proof logs of a product's journey—from raw material to finished good. This would allow companies and consumers to verify the environmental impact of specific commodities, including energy use, waste, and emissions. Such transparency could underpin reward systems for sustainable practices, as it would prevent data manipulation or deliberate misinformation.

3. Ensuring Reliable Payments. Blockchain transactions do not require a traditional bank account, a feature that benefits people in regions with limited banking infrastructure. This could ensure that funds intended for conservation or charitable causes reach their destination without being siphoned off by intermediaries. Smart contracts could automatically release payments when environmental targets are met, and the technology could also enable direct peer-to-peer energy trading, bypassing middlemen.

4. Increasing Accountability. From government to individual level, blockchain could make corruption more difficult. Votes could be recorded on a blockchain, making electoral fraud significantly harder to execute. Similarly, evidence in legal or contractual matters could be stored in a way that prevents tampering, ensuring that agreements are honored and deals are not altered retroactively.

These applications suggest that blockchain is not just a tool for financial speculation but a versatile infrastructure that could support sustainable development, strengthen governance, and empower individuals. As pilot projects expand and more institutions experiment with the technology, its role in environmental stewardship is likely to grow.
